How we think about this job.
1.June work and September work are not the same price
Everything on a garage door is a scheduled repair before the season and a queue during it. The whole point of the check is to move the work to the cheap month.
2.A brace in the garage is not a brace on the door
Retrofit bracing is bought, stored and forgotten more often than it is fitted. The inspection says plainly whether yours is installed or leaning against a wall.
3.The documents matter at the claim, not at the storm
Approval number and permit close-out are worth locating while nothing has happened. Found afterwards, they are a search; found before, they are a record.
What this means where you live
The Atlantic season opens on the first of June and closes at the end of November, which makes this the one thing on the list that cannot be postponed into next month without the postponement meaning something. What it examines is not what daily use has worn out — that is a different visit — but what a storm would find: the fixings, the bracing, the seals and the label that proves the door is what the permit said it was.
Four things a storm actually tests
The fixings into the jamb come first, because that is where an approved installation is either real or decorative. We look for corrosion at the head of each anchor, for washers that have started to dish, and for the tell-tale rust weep down a wall that says water has been tracking into a hole for a season or two. On a coast, fasteners age faster than the steel they hold.
Then the bracing, on doors that carry it. Removable posts and horizontal struts only work if somebody can find them and fit them, and the number of garages in this county where the bracing is behind a decade of storage is not small. Knowing where yours is in May is worth more than owning it in September.
Then the seals, which nobody thinks of as structural and which decide how much water arrives. A bottom seal that has hardened and split lets wind-driven rain under the door in volumes that surprise people, and the vertical weatherstripping does the same at the sides. Finally the approval label itself: it is the document that ties your door to your permit, it lives inside a section, and it is routinely painted over by somebody who did not know what it was.
This is not the inspection that lowers your premium
Two different visits get called the same thing and they are worth separating. A wind mitigation inspection is carried out by a licensed inspector, recorded on a standard form, and submitted to an insurer to support a credit — we are not that, and anyone in this trade who tells you their service visit will move your premium is describing somebody else's job.
What our visit does for that process is make it answerable. The inspector's form asks what the opening protection is and whether it is documented; a door whose label is legible, whose anchors are sound and whose permit is closed produces a straightforward form, and a door where none of that can be established produces the version that credits nothing. In that order, our check comes first and theirs follows.

When should a hurricane inspection of the garage door be booked?
Before June, and April beats May for a reason that has nothing to do with weather: lead time.

Booking in August is not useless; it is simply a check with no room behind it.
My garage door is already hurricane-rated. Is there anything to check?
Yes. The rating was true the day it was installed and it describes an assembly, not a permanent state.

None of that is covered by the panel being approved. A rated door on corroded fixings is a rated panel on a failed connection.
Can I inspect my garage door for hurricane season myself?
