South FL Garage Doors

Can a rated garage door lower my premium?

Often, and by more than people expect. Florida requires insurers to give premium credits for verified wind mitigation features, and protection of openings is one of the graded categories. The catch that decides the outcome: that category is scored on the weakest opening in the building, so impact windows throughout and a bare garage door can score no better than nothing at all.

    is what your insurer reads

  • All openings count

The weakest opening sets the grade

A wind mitigation inspection records the features that make a building survive a storm, and an insurer is required by statute to reflect verified ones in the premium. Opening protection is graded as a whole: the inspector is not averaging your windows, he is finding the opening that would fail first and recording the building at that level.

In a single-family house the garage door is very often that opening, because it is the largest one in the building and the one most likely to predate everything else. Households that spent heavily on impact windows and left the garage alone are the classic case: the money was spent, the grade did not move, and nobody explained why.

What the inspector actually needs to see

Not a brochure and not your word. The inspection is evidence-based: a permanent label on the door or a permit record naming the approved product, matching what is physically installed. A door that genuinely is rated but carries no legible identification is, for this purpose, an unrated door — which is why the sticker on the inside of the panel is worth photographing the week it goes up.

The same logic makes a permitted installation worth more than an identical unpermitted one. Two doors can be the same product, and only one of them can be proved to be, which turns the permit from an administrative cost into the thing that unlocks the credit.

Running the sum before you buy

The honest way to work out whether a rated door pays for itself is to ask your carrier what your premium would be with a full opening protection classification, and to compare that against what it is now. That is a question an agent can answer from your existing file in a phone call, and it converts a vague benefit into a number of years.

Two things make that sum better than it first looks. The credit repeats every year for as long as you own the house, and the classification transfers to the next owner along with the inspection report — which is a small but real argument at resale in a market where buyers ask about insurability before they ask about the kitchen.

Wind mitigation credits and your garage door

  • What does an inspector need to see to credit a rated garage door?

A wind mitigation inspection is evidence-based: the inspector needs a permanent label on the garage door or a permit record naming the approved product.

    • The evidence has to match what is physically installed
    • A brochure and your word carry no weight
    • An unlabeled rated door can score as unprotected

Where the approval number lives on a door

  • How much is a wind mitigation credit worth on a garage door?

The value of the credit varies by carrier, by the rest of the building's features and by where the house sits, so any single figure quoted online is somebody else's policy.

    • The credit attaches to the classification
    • The classification attaches to the weakest opening
    • Moving that opening is what changes the band
  • Does bracing an existing garage door count, or must it be a new door?

Bracing counts when the reinforcement is an approved system installed as a documented assembly, rather than steel added by a well-meaning person.

    • Product name and approval number on the file
    • A record that ties the system to your address
    • Evidenced exactly the way a new door is

How an approved bracing system is fitted

  • An old wind mitigation report on a garage door — does it still count?

Wind mitigation reports carry an expiry, and an old one will eventually have to be redone.

    • A new inspection is how an upgrade reaches the premium
    • Upgrading and never re-inspecting leaves it unclaimed
    • The credit then repeats at every renewal
