Why garage door hinges are numbered, and why it matters
Every hinge on a sectional door carries a stamped digit, and that digit is not a part number in the ordinary sense — it sets how far the roller stem stands off the face of the panel, which is what keeps the door tracking correctly as it bends through the curve. Fit a number two where a number three belongs and the door will bind at exactly that point every cycle.

The numbering runs upward, and it is not decorative
Numbers increase as you move up the door, because each joint higher in the stack needs its roller a little further out to stay in the channel as the section rotates. A door with all its hinges swapped for one convenient size will still open, and it will grind at the transition and wear the track edge until something jams. This is a common outcome after a hurried repair using whatever was on the truck.
The end hinges are a separate family again: they carry the roller and take the lateral load, so they are heavier gauge than the center hinges that only join two sections. Reading the stamp before ordering is the difference between a repair that disappears and one you hear every morning.
Cracks start at the fastener, not the knuckle
Look at the sheet metal around the screw holes rather than at the pivot. Galvanized steel hinges fail by tearing outward from a fastener as the hole elongates under repeated load, and by the time the tear is visible the screw has usually already loosened its grip in the panel. On a steel-skinned door that means the skin itself is now carrying load it was not meant to.
One cracked hinge is a part. Three or four cracked hinges in the same door are a symptom, and the usual underlying cause is a door running out of balance or dragging on a seized roller. Replacing the hinges without finding out what overloaded them means fitting new ones into the same forces.
What a coastal garage does to galvanized steel
Zinc coating protects the base metal until it is breached, and a screw driven through the plating breaches it on the day the door was installed. Humid salt-laden air then works at that opening for years. It is why hinges here often show rust blooming around every fastener while the rest of the plate still looks new, and why stainless hardware is worth specifying on a replacement within sight of the water.
