How a garage door is priced, and why the visit is free
Arriving at a real number takes a visit, the visit is free, and you owe nothing at the end of it whether the job goes ahead or not. It has to happen because a torsion spring is specified by three dimensions that are read off the wound coil itself, in the garage, and a figure offered before anyone has read them is an opening position rather than a price.

The three numbers a phone call cannot reach
A torsion spring is specified by how thick its wire is, how wide the coil sits, and how long it runs, and those three together decide both what it costs and whether it will balance the door at all. They are stamped on a cone or measured with a caliper against the wound coil, in a garage, by somebody looking at it. A caller can rarely say more than that the door is a double, which narrows the price to a range wide enough to be useless.
The same limitation applies further up. Whether an opener is worth repairing turns on which board failed and whether the maker still sells it; whether a section can be swapped turns on whether that model is still produced in that profile and color. Both are questions of identification, and identification means reading a label that is usually on the inside of the end stile or the back of the motor housing.
What you can send ahead to narrow it
Two photographs do most of the work before anybody drives out. One taken from inside, standing back far enough to catch the shaft above the opening with the springs on it, tells us the system type and roughly its condition. One close enough to read the label on the door or the opener tells us the model. With those and a rough width, the conversation stops being generic and starts being about your door.
None of it is required. It shortens the visit rather than replacing it, and on an emergency it is often the wrong priority anyway — a door that has dropped on a car or a cable that has whipped loose is not a photography exercise, it is a reason to stop operating the door and let somebody make it safe.
What the written estimate has to contain
It names the part rather than the category, because a spring and a spring are not the same purchase, and a quote that says only spring replacement is comparing nothing to nothing. It separates parts from labor. It states whether a permit is included and who pulls it. It carries a license number, which is not a courtesy but a requirement placed on every advertisement and document a Florida contractor issues.
Ask for those four things from everybody you call, and most of the spread between the quotes explains itself without anyone having to argue about it. The cheapest number on a page that names nothing is usually cheap because of something it has not mentioned, and the item it has not mentioned is nearly always the permit or the approval.
What legitimately moves the number afterwards
Three things do, and they are worth knowing in advance so that none of them arrives as a surprise. A replacement in this county has to be an approved assembly and has to be permitted, and that is a cost line rather than an option. A jamb that turns out to be rotten behind the bracket has to be made sound before anything is bolted to it. And a door reached through a narrow side yard or over a boat takes longer to work on than one on an open driveway.
