Miami-Dade NOA for a garage door: reading it, finding yours

A Notice of Acceptance is the county's own product approval: it names one manufacturer's model, the maximum dimensions it was tested at, the pressures it withstood, whether it is impact-rated, and the exact fastening drawing it must be installed to. It expires, it gets renewed, and it stops applying the moment the installation departs from the drawing attached to it.

What a NOA actually is

  • A county acceptance

    Miami-Dade's own approval

  • One product, one document

    sizes and pressures are listed

  • It is local

What is actually written inside one

Four things carry all the weight. The scope names a product family and the configurations covered. A dimensional limit caps how wide and how tall the tested assembly may be — a model approved to sixteen feet does not cover an eighteen-foot opening by extrapolation. A pressure rating gives two signed numbers. And an attached drawing set specifies jamb material, anchor type, edge distance and spacing, which is the part installers skip and inspectors check.

The document also carries dates: issue, renewal history and expiration. An approval that lapsed is not a technicality — a permit application referencing a dead number gets rejected, and the correction usually arrives after the door is already hanging.

Finding the number on a door you did not order

Start inside the garage with a flashlight. Approved assemblies carry a permanent label, usually on the end stile of one of the middle sections or on the inside face near a hinge, listing manufacturer, model and the approval number. Photograph it before touching anything; the labels fade and they are what a wind mitigation inspector will ask for.

No label does not automatically mean no approval — it can also mean a repainted door or a section replaced by somebody careless. The next place to look is the property's permit history, where a legitimate installation left a filed application naming the product. Finding nothing in either place is itself an answer: the door most likely predates enforcement, or went up without a permit.

NOA or statewide approval — both exist, only one is local

Florida runs a statewide product approval system, and a product can be listed there without being usable here. The High-Velocity Hurricane Zone keeps its own evaluation, so a statewide listing is valid in this county only where it explicitly states approval for that zone. A salesperson showing you a Florida approval number is not showing you the wrong document — they are showing you a document you still have to read to the end.

How a valid approval stops being valid

By substitution and by improvisation. Swapping the specified anchor for whatever was on the truck, shortening edge distances to miss a crack in the block, adding a window kit the tested assembly never had, cutting a section down to fit a narrower opening — each of these leaves you with a door whose paperwork describes something other than what is bolted to your wall.

The consequence is rarely immediate. It shows up when an inspection is forced by something else — a sale, a claim, an insurer asking for documentation — and at that point the fix is not an argument, it is a second installation.

Notice of Acceptance: reading the approval on your door

  • What does NOA stand for on a garage door?

Notice of Acceptance. Miami-Dade County's product control section issues it after a product passes the test protocols the county recognizes.

    • It is the reference a permit application quotes
    • It names a configuration, not a brand
  • Can I look up a garage door approval number myself?

Yes, and both searches are free — the county publishes its product approval search and the state publishes its own for statewide listings.

    • Confirm the number is real
    • Confirm it is still current
    • Confirm it covers the configuration quoted
  • My garage door label is unreadable. How do I find the approval?

The manufacturer and model are usually enough to work backwards, since approvals are searchable by company.

    • Failing that, the installation permit carries the number
    • Photograph the label as it survives
  • Do garage door approvals expire even if the door is fine?

The document expires; your installed door does not become illegal when it does.

    • Expiry governs what may be sold from that date
    • And what may be permitted from that date

Which is why an expiry only ever bites during a new project, never during ownership.
