Cost guides average the whole country. Most of the country builds garage doors to hold themselves up, keep the rain out and look decent from the street. That is a light steel skin over a light frame, and it is genuinely a $1,500 product. Nothing about it is dishonest — it is simply describing a different object from the one your permit will require.
What your permit requires is a door that has been pushed and pulled thousands of times in a laboratory and shot with a nine-pound length of lumber, then approved by name and model number. That testing, the steel it takes to pass it, and the reinforced track and jamb that come with it are the entire difference between the two numbers. You are not paying a Miami premium. You are buying a different product.
Four things nobody counts until the invoice
A permit is not optional on a replacement, and it carries a fee plus an inspection appointment. The old door has to leave your property, and disposal is a line, not a courtesy. If your opener is more than a decade old it will usually not be re-used on a heavier panel, so it joins the job.
