Corrosion is the local cause, not wear
Inland, cables usually die from abrasion where the strands run over a drum groove. Within a few miles of Biscayne Bay the failure arrives differently: chloride in the air attacks the galvanizing, rust creeps between the strands from the inside, and the cable loses section long before the surface looks bad. That is why a visual check can pass a cable that fails a week later.
Run a rag along the length with the door closed. Snagging means broken strands standing proud of the lay — those are called fishhooks, and a cable with any of them is finished regardless of how much metal is left. Look hardest at the bottom two feet, where run-off and floor water collect.
Why the good one gets replaced too
Both cables were cut from the same reel, fitted on the same day, and have hauled the same tonnage ever since. Swapping only the failed side leaves you with one new component and one that is statistically next in line, and the mismatch in stretch between a fresh cable and an aged one puts the door slightly out of level every cycle.
A cable that failed because something else was wrong will simply fail again. A drum with a chewed groove, a bottom bracket sitting at the wrong angle, or a door that binds in its track all chew through cable. Fitting a new one without correcting the cause buys a few months.
The part of this job that hurts people
The cable terminates at the bottom bracket, and that bracket is bolted to the lowest panel while the spring holds the whole assembly in tension. Undoing it on a door that has not been properly secured releases that energy through whatever is nearest. This is the specific reason cable work is not a homeowner job even though the part itself costs very little.
